Dubai's iconic Sheikh Zayed Road swapped cars for cyclists on Sunday morning as more than 41,000 riders turned out to mark the start of the 10th annual Dubai Fitness Challenge with the much-loved Dubai Ride presented by DP World.

In what is believed to be the Dubai Ride's biggest turn-out yet, a massive 41,836 cyclists saddled-up to kick-start the month-long Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC) in style, riding through the shadows of the Burj Khalifa, Museum of the Future and many more of the Emirate's most famous landmarks.

From serious cyclists to families with young children, residents and visitors alike got on their bikes for what was the first major event of this year's landmark 10th DFC, kicking off a month of sport, fitness and feel-good activities across the city.

And with 2026 marking the UAE's Year of Family, there was a particular emphasis on getting different generations moving together.

Dubai's Streets Become a Cycling Playground

Riders had two routes to choose from, depending on how adventurous they were feeling.

The family-friendly 4km Downtown route took participants along Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, with Burj Khalifa and Dubai Opera providing a pretty spectacular backdrop.

Meanwhile, those looking to stretch their legs tackled the 12km Sheikh Zayed Road route, cycling past the Museum of the Future and Dubai Water Canal on roads normally reserved for cars.

It wasn't all about clocking up kilometres, either.

Spider-Man, Pokémon characters, roaming DJs, marching bands, Bhangra drummers and cheerleaders brought a festival atmosphere to the streets, while cyclists were encouraged to decorate their bikes and turn up in fancy dress.

Prizes were up for grabs for everything from the best-decorated bike to the most creative family and group costumes.

The event also welcomed 53 People of Determination, with a dedicated entry point supporting participants using handcycles, tandem bikes and adapted bicycles.

More Than Just a Bike Ride

Now celebrating its 10th edition, Dubai Fitness Challenge has become one of the city's biggest annual community initiatives, encouraging residents to complete 30 minutes of exercise every day for 30 days.

And Dubai Ride is arguably one of its most memorable experiences, offering people the rare opportunity to enjoy some of the city's most recognisable roads and landmarks from a completely different perspective.

His Excellency Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, described the turnout as an incredible start to this year's Challenge.

"Seeing Sheikh Zayed Road and Downtown Dubai transformed into vibrant cycling routes, with thousands of residents and visitors riding past some of our city's most iconic landmarks, is a powerful reflection of Dubai's passion for sport and active living."

He added that seeing parents, children and grandparents riding together was particularly special during the UAE's Year of Family.

Ahmed Al Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, echoed that sentiment, highlighting how the event has helped make fitness a shared part of life in Dubai.

"Seeing thousands of people come together on Sheikh Zayed Road is a reminder of how far this initiative has come over the past decade, bringing movement into everyday life and creating experiences that connect our communities."
